History of the Homebox
Upon returning to North America after many years living on the small and simple (if highly populated) island of Java, Jodi was amazed and overwhelmed with the amount of paperwork involved in setting up and maintaining a household here. Lease (or mortgage papers), half a dozen bank and credit accounts, retirement accounts, three different insurances, all manner of communications: phone, internet, mobile phone, mobile internet, utilities contracts... New paper everywhere! While the initial urge was to run back to the island, instead she went googling for help. The same answer kept coming back: Collect together the following: a filing cabinet, a bunch of hanging files with plastic tabbies, and manila file folders, some label stickers, a marker, and start making up a filing system. That’s a lot of work, but no problem!
… Until the first time she went looking for the auto insurance policy booklet.

Was it under:
I for Insurance
A for Auto
C for Car
G for the name of the Insurer
P for the name of the brokerage
B for Betty, the agent

Or did someone else use the file and leave it elsewhere??

… And why am I sorting through recipes, scuba diving registration, instructions for caring for houseplants, and clippings from magazines from 1999?! It was time to simplify and sort out the truly vital papers from the rest of the pile. For example, if someone calls and wants to take me to dinner in Rome tonight, I need that passport pronto! And while I’m gone, if the house floods, I better know exactly where I left the insurance papers, so someone else can take care of it! This realization was akin to an epiphany. It wasn’t necessary to have everything in order, just the Really Important Stuff. After I made my own “Homebox” to help me get control of my career, health, finances, home and other vital documents, others started asking me to make them one. Eh, voila! The Homebox filing system was born.

Bio
Owner Jodi Sinden organizes everything within reach. While researching the Homebox, she helped de-clutter hundreds of households, thus learning first-hand how bad the problem really is. One thing she knows for sure: the average household has at least one shoebox with Really Important Stuff in it that nobody knows exactly where it is.

Prior to starting the company, she spent another life working in international development and commerce, helping to organize (of course!) trade missions, a world summit and really big scavenger hunts. She attended a grand total of six universities, and holds a degree in economics, which, since the advent of the Homebox, she knows exactly where to find.
